PUMHS for Women started its journey as a medical school specifically for women under its title Peoples Medical College which was founded by the then Prime Minister Zulifqar Ali Bhutto in 1974. According to the estimates that 6000 female doctors have been educated at this school in the past. In 2009, Govt. of Sindh upgraded the medical school to the standard of a university. It also changed its name to the Peoples University of Medical and Health Sciences Nawabshah.
